How to reboot Zune

If you encounter some problem and feel that you need to "reset" or "reboot" your Zune, simply hold down the "Back" and "Up" buttons simultaneously for a few seconds.

Note: "Back" is the separate button to the left of the large middle "control pad". "Up" is the top of the circular control pad.

See the official Zune Navigation page.

Or download the official Zune Product Guide.

Or access other Zune Manuals.

I'm glad you posted this.
Twice I've had my zune freeze to a black screen [backlight on].
the first time I plugged it into my computer and that was that
this last time.. I had made kind of a moron problem

I had moved my computer, and when reconnecting had plugged my zune cable into one of the front ports which on my computer are usb 1... So I was fairly convinced my zune was broken when my computer told me it couldn't recognize the device...

After realizing my stupid mistake I plugged it into a usb 2.0 device, found this, restarted it, and everything is working.

Long story short, thank you.

Thank you SO MUCH! I love my Zune and this is the first time I've had any kind of problem with it. Hopefully this doesn't happen again, but at least if it does I'll know how to fix it! Thanks!

I was trying to install an update to my new Zune and it has locked up. I tried the back and up button reset but to no avail. Any other ideas.

Before you follow Jack's advice(which is good) check that the lock switch on the top is in the unlocked position.

I'm so stupid and I thought to reset it you had to press the center button and the down button
but then I remembered that was for the Ipod :)

my problem is the hold switch at the top wont turn off. i move it from side to side but the buttons still dont work.

ive plugged it up to my ac charger, usb charger, and car charger. still nothing.

ive toggled it from side to side. nothing.

i dont have the receipt or a warranty.

I add my kudos for the straightforward answer to the Zune reboot issue. Your post came up #1 on Google to my "how to reboot a Zune" query. My Zune "froze," ironically, after being left in a car in the Texas heat; i was afraid I had fried it. After powering it down, it wouldn't power up. The reboot instructions brought it back to life perfectly.

Thanks again!
